This is the mountain massif seen from the bottom of Lago Pehoe in the Torres del Paine region of Patagonia
A view looking up along the Frances Valley route in Torres Del Paine. Shot handheld on the move as we climbed to the outlook.
Capturing the desolation along the valley leading to the assent of Volcán Chaitén. The volcano erupted in 2008 and devastated the surrounding forests along with the nearby town of Chaitén.
The final accent to the Towers at Base Torres. These towers are 2800 meters high. We needed to leave at 2.50 am to reach them for sunrise... Well, you take what you get with Landscape Photography and sunrises are not guaranteed, but the atmosphere was stunning.
This was an extremely hard image to capture at the “Sendero Cascadas Escondidas” because the water's overwhelming force created a permanent cloud of mist that kept covering the lens within seconds.
A 400mm telephoto lens isolated some of Grey’s Glacier’s features. The area is immense and must be impassable, but the view from above as you descend along the edge is utterly mind-blowing.
Grey Glacier as it calves into Lago Grey. The scale of this cannot be captured in a single image. During the previous day the valley reverberated with the booms of ice calving into the waters of Lago Grey. This was shot at sunrise the following day.
A view along the valley as we navigated the Torres Del Paine “O” Trek route.
An isolated colony of King Penguins in the Southern tip of Chile.
A sunrise on the town’s waterfront in Puerto Natales. This port town is the last bit of civilisation before heading towards the mountains of Torres Del Paine
An image from the ancient forests which have been battered by fierce storms in the foothills of the Andes mountain range. The forest was a whole day’s walk before we exited into a glacial valley at the other end. It could have been a scene from Mirkwood in Lord of The Rings.
This was shot overnight during a solo trek to the most southern part of South America’s mainland which can only be reached on foot. The light behind the mountains is from the summer sun just below the horizon. There is no light pollution here, which allows the Milky Way to be seen even with this additional summer light. It is a lonely, isolated spot to camp under the stars. The following morning I was treated to a pod of large Fin whales jumping around in the bay.
A scene from the shores of Lago Dickson in the evening. The following morning the nearby mountain pass was wiped out by blizzards and some of the trekkers ahead of us had to make a hasty retreat back to the base camp at Los Perros.
Patagonia skies fill with amazing lenticular cloud formations that just hang above the mountains and fascinate the viewer. This was an evening camping on the beach near San Isidro Lighthouse. This singular pink heart cloud was immovable.
Just had to shot this tree on the way back down the Frances Valley on the O Trek.
Grey’s glacial ice at dawn drifts towards our campsite. This is taken just a few minutes apart from the previous image of the same location. However, the sky colour here is particularly striking and within minutes the red skies have given way to the blazing sunshine that will follow for the rest of the day.
A hot afternoon looking towards the edge of Grey Glacier. Cold in the valley below, but sweaty trekking with a 15kg backpack on the edge of the valley.
One of the many waterfalls feeding off the summits along the trekking routes in the Torres Del Paine mountain range.
Sunrise at Volcano Villarrica from the southside. An hour later this active volcano started to smoke.
